I don’t like Thirteen Women

Aug 1, 2023

William John Clifton Haley was the lead singer of the American Rockabilly group known as Bill Haley and his Comets (clever name for a group don’t you think) who had a minor hit with Thirteen Women (And Only One Man In Town) in 1954. Some DJs turned the record over and played the B side. This tune went down better. The following year this B side was included in the film Blackboard Jungle. Suddenly it was popular worldwide and number one in the States and the UK. The B side became the A side. What was this tune? Why, it was (We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock. For a while Bill and the Comets were the biggest pop group on the planet but were soon eclipsed by Elvis. Bill managed to be married three times before his death at the age of 55.
